He said the suspects were still under police custody and that they were yet to be produced in court.
“False news is being reported that they were produced in court. I got the opportunity to speak to Amal Perera and his son,” Premaratne said.
“The law in Dubai is different to that of Sri Lanka. Generally, in Sri Lanka, the suspects are produced in court after completing investigations. However, the situation is different here,” Mr. Premaratne said.
He said a Sri Lankan suspect who was nabbed in Dubai sometime back was kept under police custody for 21 months without being produced before court.
He said in Dubai, the suspects who were arrested on charges of murder, drugs and rape can be kept under police custody indefinitely.
“Dubai police are considering who should be produced in court and who should not. We are discussing with the Dubai Police to get Amal Perera and his son released without being produced in court. If someone was found guilty of using drugs, they could be sentenced to minimum of three years in jail. None of the arrested suspects have been in possession of drugs except for consuming drugs,” he said.(Amith Maduranga)
